Causes
The most common of all conjunctivitis is the viral conjunctivitis and can cause eye redness, itching, burning and foreign body sensation. It is often caused by adenoviruses. Other possible pathogens include the herpes simplex and varicella zoster viruses.
The bacterial Conjunctivitis is less common and is usually caused by bacteria that live on human skin and enter the eye through contaminated eye makeup or other products. Less commonly, chlamydia or gonorrhea infections can cause conjunctivitis.
An allergic conjunctivitis is caused due to an allergic reaction. Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (hay fever conjunctivitis) and perennial (year-round) allergic conjunctivitis are the most common types of allergic reaction of the eyes

Course
The time course of viral conjunctivitis is similar to upper respiratory tract infections, with the worst symptoms appearing after three to five days and resolving after seven to fourteen days. These types of infectious conjunctivitis are very contagious and can be easily transmitted from person to person.
Bacterial conjunctivitis usually resolves without treatment within two to five days, but treatment may be needed.
